The famed “Indian Head sweater”.This has been completed entirely in polymer artists clay, tiny pieces all individually cut with a scalpel, as opposed to using paint.

Joseph writes: “I tend to use only clay when the subject is a knit and the details i am trying to recreate are raised on the item ,such as on a knitted sweater where the artwork/design is created from different colored wool and therefore benefit from being cut from clay rather than painted on.For jackets with printed graphics, the opposite is true: I use paint in a similar way to how graphics have been printed or painted on the original piece of clothing.Of course, cutting pieces of clay which are fractions of a millimeter in size is laborious work under the microscope”

The “Indian Head” sweater, as it known to RL collectors, is a popular but very rare piece. In 2013, Ralph Lauren released an interesting new twist on this design with an almost ‘folk art’ silk/lined sweater top with loose, unhemmed yarn with multiple layers and various different threads. However this sweater from 1994, remains a very popular and iconic piece.
